Summer 2011 Hair Regime

In my first year of going natural, I was quite heavy on my hair regime.  Every day, if I wasn’t cowashing, I was either baggying, tea rinsing, or doing something else with my hair.  I also moisturised and sealed, faithfully, every single day.

Now, my regime has to be much more simpler and my products a lot more versatile.  This is due to several reasons:

  1. My hair is getting much longer, hence I do not have the luxury of washing every day because it takes longer to dry and I can’t very well spend 12 hours each day with a soggy head now, can I?
  2. My hair is much healthier, so I do not need to moisturise and seal every day.  I find that my hair is not as dry as it used to be, perhaps due to diligently caring or due to the use of natural, home-made products that I whip up in my kitchen.  In any case, moisturising and sealing every day is now too heavy for my hair, no matter how lightly I apply the product, so I just moisturise and seal every other day.
  3. I just don’t have the time.  My life is a lot busier – between working, and running 3 different blogs, I prefer my hair to work around my lifestyle and not the other way around.

Due to all these reasons, I have had to

  1. Simplify my regime, and
  2. Ensure my products are versatile and multi-purpose.

Working on the recipes for my home-made products has been fun as I have had many years of experience working on the use of plants for therapuetic, and now, cosmetic purposes.   I am still constantly learning and commited to finding new ways to improve my products, so my recipes are ever evolving and becoming better & better.

My entire regime pivots around one sole purpose – ensuring my hair is adequately hydrated.  Moisture & hydration is the solution to many of the problems of curly hair.  My hair LOVES moisture & drinks it up with gusto.  I find  that when my hair is properly hydrated, I have better definition, less frizz, increased sheen, more growth, to name but a few.  However, the key is getting the right balance of moisture in the hair, as over-hydrated hair can cause a lot of problems.

In summary, my hair regime currently involves henna-ing my hair once a month and doing a cassia treatment 3ce in the month.

WEEK 1

SUNDAY:

  • Scalp Massage & Prepoo:  I start the week with a scalp massage using a mixture of vatika & castor oil.  I then let the mix sit in my hair for an hour.
  • Shampoo:  My hair is shampooed with either Giovanni 50:50 Balancing Shampoo or Aubrey Organics Honeysucke Rose Moisturising Shampoo.  I use Giovanni when my hair feels full of gunk and Aubrey Organics at other times
  • Ayurveda Mask: I then apply an ayurveda paste made with my favourite ayurveda herbal powders: brahmi, amla, and shikakai.  This sits in my hair for 30 minutes and is then thoroughly rinsed off.
  • Henna Application:  It’s now time to apply my henna.  This is always mixed the night before using 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar in half a cup of warm water.  I add some honey & olive oil to the henna, apply and  to sit in my hair for about 3 hours before rinsing out.
  • Indigo Time:  After rinsing out the henna, I apply indigo and leave to sit for another 2-3 hours.  When ready, I rinse thoroughly with plenty of water, shampoo with Aubrey Organics Honeysucke Rose Moisturising Shampoo.
  • Deep Condition/Hot Oil:  I mix up some honey, oil and a dollop of Aubrey Organics Honeysucke Rose Moisturising Conditioner, apply and leave it for about 1 hour before rinsing.  Alternatively, I would have a hot oil treatment using a mixture of Olive Oil, Jojoba Oil and Almond Oil
  • Moisturise:  I liberally apply my home-made Leave-In Moisturising Spritz and seal with my home-made Serum-Sealant before putting my hair in large twists to stretch the hair before styling.
  • Style:  I apply my home-made Styling Cream and then work on my style, which is generally twists, braids or large cornrows.

MONDAY

  • I simply spritz my hair with my home-made Leave-In Moisturising Spritz in the morning and then in the evening.

TUESDAY

  • Same as above, except I seal my ends lightly in the evening with my Serum-Sealant.

WEDNESDAY:

  • Same as Monday.

THURSDAY

  • I rinse my hair with plenty of clean water, then follow it up with a Herbal Tea Rinse made with a mix of rosemary, horsetail and nettle herbs. Alternatively, I would baggy with a mixture of Aloe Vera Juice, Water & Coconut Milk.
  • I finish up by moisturising and sealing.

FRIDAY

  • Same as Monday

SATURDAY:

  • As Monday, except I seal my ends lightly in the evening with my Serum-Sealant.

NB –

  • I only henna & indigo on the 1st Sunday of the month.  On other weeks, my Sunday routine is the same, except after the Scalp Massage/Prepoo  and Shampoo, I would have a Cassia treatment.  This involves mixing Cassia powder with a paste with half a cup of warm water, then mixing in 2 tablespoons each of honey and olive oil.  I apply this mixture to my hair for about 5 hours, rinse and then Deep Condition and style as usual.
  • My Sunday routine is quite time-intensive, so I normally do this in the evening.  Whilst the henna, indigo or deep conditioner preparations are sitting in my hair, I busy myself doing other tasks around the house.  If I need to nip out quickly for something, I slap on a funky hat or scarf.
  • Sometimes I like to wear loose hair for the weekend, so I might take down the braids or twists on Friday evening.  My hair regimes doesn’t change. I can still moisturise and seal whether or not I am wearing loose hair.
