I just LOOOOOVE the seasonal changes. They give me a good, and sometimes valid excuse, to embrace my inner product junkie and stock up on new hair products, as well as try out new hairstyles and hair treatments for my natural hair.
If you have been following my tweets and this blog, you will remember how I mentioned that I had no intention of getting sick this winter. After falling ill in the last two winters due to my daily cowashing and tea rinsing to keep my hair hydrated, I came up with an alternative this winter. I still want my hair to remain juicy and hydrated throughout the winter, but without running the risk of another cold, flu or pneumonia.
So I started the BAGGY CHALLENGE, which you can join me in.
Baggying is just one of the changes to my regime for the fall season.
In summary, here is my Fall 2011 Hair Regime.
- Night Baggying – read more about it in the link above.
- Biweekly Henna. I would prefer to do this monthly, but my greys and new growth come in very quickly – every 10 to 14 days – making it necessary for me to do my henna sesssions every two weeks instead. Sigh.
- No more shampoo for me. I will be using diluted African Black Soap to wash my hair instead.
WEEKLY REGIME
SUNDAY PM :
- Scalp Massage & Prepoo: I start the week with a scalp massage using a mixture of vatika & castor oil. I then let the mix sit in my hair for an hour.
- Shampoo: My hair is normally washed with the diluted African Black Soap. Due to the drying nature of the henna, I add a few drops of olive oil to the diluted solution before I use it.
- Henna Application: It’s now time to apply my henna. This is always mixed the night before using a cup of warm green tea. I add some honey & olive oil for conditioning, as well as amla for strength and to retain my curl pattern to the henna, apply and leave it to sit in my hair overnight.
- Indigo Time: After rinsing out the henna, I apply indigo and leave to sit for about 3 hours. I use indigo after the henna to retain my dark hair colour. When ready, I rinse thoroughly with plenty of water and shampoo with diluted African Black Soap
- Deep Condition/Hot Oil: I mix up some honey, oil and an egg, apply and leave it for about 1 hour before rinsing. Alternatively, I would have a hot oil treatment using a mixture of Olive Oil, Jojoba Oil and Almond Oil.
- Moisturise: I liberally apply my water-based Creamy Leave-In Conditioner and seal with my home-made Nourishing Hair Oil before putting my hair in large twists to stretch the hair before styling.
- Style: I apply my Shea Mix Butter and then work on my style, which will be generally medium sized twists or braids. I simply do not have the patience for small twists, plus my hair tangles really badly when I put in small anything – small twists, small braids etc.
