2012 Winter Hair Care Regime

I know this post on my natural hair care regime for the winter has been a little late, but I am sure you will forgive me as you know that I have had my hands a bit full with the launch of my natural and organic product line.

My hair care regime slipped a little during this hectic period.  I certainly wasn’t expecting the flurry of activity I experienced with my product line within the 1st two months of its inception.

With the Christmas festive period following hot on the heels of my business launch, it is any wonder I found the time to even wash my hair.

I did try my best and I think you will be quite proud of me :)

Here’s a quick summary of my regime for this winter:

  • Biweekly henna-indigo sessions.  This one, I refused to let slip.  Can’t be spending my Christmas & New year with gray hairs now, can I? ;) I tend to sprout gray hairs along my front hair line when I am super busy or stressed, so this aspect of my regime had to be maintained with military precision.
  • I am still using African Black Soap to wash my hair, but also currently experimenting with my own hand made shampoos, more of which I will divulge later ;)
  • My nightly baggying slipped to 3ce a week baggying.  Most nights, I was so tired that I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.  I still try to keep up with the Baggying For Longer Hair Challenge by baggying 3 nights a week and when I find myself working from home during the week, I baggy for an hour or two during the day.
  • I have also been washing my hair every fortnight, instead of every week.  The weekly wash was really hard to let go of, so I would alternate an ACV rinse one week with a full wash the next week.
Here’s how my hair care regime is looking like for winter:
WEEK 1 – SHAMPOOO & HENNA-INDIGO SESSION:

SUNDAY PM :

  • Scalp Massage & Prepoo:  I start the week with a scalp massage using a mixture of coconut oil & castor oil.  I then let the mix sit in my hair for an hour
  • Shampoo:  My hair is normally washed with the diluted African Black Soap.    Due to the drying nature of the henna, I add a few drops of olive oil to the diluted solution before I use it.
  • Henna Application:  It’s now time to apply my henna.  This is always mixed the night before using a cup of warm green tea & apple cider – Read HERE  on why I use both ACV & green tea in my henna mix.  I add some honey & olive oil for conditioning, as well as amla for strength and to retain my curl pattern to the henna, apply and leave it to sit in my hair overnight.
MONDAY AM
  • Indigo Time:  After rinsing out the henna, I apply indigo and leave to sit for about 3 hours.  I use indigo after the henna to retain my dark hair colour. When ready, I rinse thoroughly with plenty of water and shampoo with diluted African Black Soap
  • Deep Condition/Hot Oil:  I mix up some honey, oil and an egg, apply and leave it for about 1 hour before rinsing.  I then follow this up with a hot oil treatment using my Shea Baobab Nourishing Hair Oil,  which was listed ‘Best of 2011 Beauty Products’
  • Moisturise:  I liberally apply my water-based Creamy Hibiscus Rose Leave-In Conditioner and seal with my Shea Baobab Hair Oil before putting my hair in large twists to stretch the hair before styling.
  • Style:  I apply my Choco Shea Decadent Hair Butter (another favourite with many of my customers & readers at the moment) and then work on my style, which will be generally medium sized twists
WEEK 2 – APPLE CIDER VINEGAR RINSE

SUNDAY PM :

  • Cleansing:  I rinse my hair with water thoroughly till it runs clear and then use diluted apple cider vinegar to wash my hair and scalp.
  • Deep Condition/Hot Oil:  I mix up some honey, oil and an egg, apply and leave it for about 1 hour before rinsing.
  • Moisturise:  I moisturise with my Hibiscus Rose Leave In Conditioner and seal with the Shea Baobab Nourishing Hair Oil
  • Style:  As usual, I style my hair into medium sized twists or braids using my Choco Shea Decadent Hair Butter.
WEEKS 3 & 4 in the month is pretty much a repeat of the above.
There’s my regime – rather simple at the moment, but works perfectly fine for me.

  1. Wow you are inspiring me!! I am getting very lazy with my hair regimen and have decided to get back on track this year. I have been natural for just over a year and that in between stage of growth is frustrating. I too need to be more on point with my hair colouring and henna indigo seems the healthiest way to go. I will be buying some more henna from Lush as they do the henna and indigo already mixed in their blocks of henna. I will save this page and use it as a template for how I should do my haircare.

    Thanks so much
